What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a cap placed over a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance.
Crowns are recommended in the following cases: Restoring a tooth with a large filling and minimal remaining tooth structure Protecting a weak tooth from breaking, such as after a root canal treatment Covering a discolored or misshapen tooth Supporting a dental bridge Covering a dental implant At our clinic, we use CEREC technology to provide same-day crowns.
This allows us to prepare the tooth, take a digital scan, and create your crown in one visit, ensuring a perfect fit and eliminating the need for multiple appointments.
What are dental bridges?

A dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth by connecting an artificial tooth (or teeth) to the adjacent natural teeth or dental implants.
A bridge literally “bridges” the gap left by missing teeth.
There are several types of bridges:
- Traditional Bridge: The most common type, fitting over natural teeth on both sides of the gap.
- Maryland Bonded Bridge: Features metal or porcelain wings instead of crowns, bonded to the adjacent teeth.
- Cantilever Bridge: Supported by just one crown on one side, ideal for situations where only one natural tooth is available on either side.
- Implant Bridges: Fitted on dental implants rather than natural teeth, requiring two implants for support.
Indications for a Dental Bridge:
Replacing missing teeth to restore function and aesthetics. Restoring chewing and speaking ability. Maintaining facial structure and preventing shifting of remaining teeth
The Dental Crown & Bridge Procedure:
Types of dental Crowns:
Porcelain Crowns: Natural-looking and highly durable.
Metal Crowns (Gold, Silver, or Alloys): Known for strength and longevity.
Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns: A combination of porcelain and metal, offering both aesthetics and durability.
Zirconia Crowns: Extremely durable and natural in appearance, often used for back teeth.
Crowns restore individual teeth by covering them with a protective cap. Bridges replace missing teeth by securing a pontic between two crowns. Implants integrate with the jawbone to support a single artificial tooth or a bridge, providing a stable and long-lasting solution.
A dental bridge typically feels natural within two weeks, though adjustment time may vary. By using adjacent teeth for support, bridges create a seamless appearance. While some adaptation is needed, most patients quickly become comfortable with their new restoration.
A dental bridge can be either removable or fixed, with fixed bridges providing greater stability. Once bonded, only a dental professional can remove them. They are typically secured by attaching artificial teeth to adjacent natural teeth or by placing crowns.
Dental crowns and bridges should be comfortable and feel natural, without causing pain or discomfort. If you experience any pain, contact your dental provider promptly for evaluation and necessary adjustments.
While dental crowns may not last a lifetime, proper care can extend their durability to 15–30 years. Gold crowns, though long-lasting, are less commonly used due to cost. Crowns are recommended to preserve a tooth’s structure or restore its appearance.
